G'day!

First let me clear up the identification of the lizard included in the previous post.  It's a Long-nosed Dragon (Lophognathus longirostris).  This impressivly slender, agile, racy lizard can run on its hind legs at up to 24 kilometers per hour, taking remarkably long strides.  It runs down low-flying insects such as bees, wasps, bugs, beetles, grasshoppers, and moths. See http://www.natureswindow.dk/Lophognathus%20longirostris.html for additional photos.

Well, we loved Kalbarri.  It's a beautiful little town right on the coast and at the edge of the Kalbarri National Park.  The scenery is spectacular and there are some attractions worth seeing...plus there are a couple of restaurants that are outstanding!

Here's a view of the Murchison River in Kalbarri National Park...

And one along the coast...

We hiked a trail along the coast and encountered this native family having a picnic...

Every morning on the foreshore, they feed the pelicans...Paula got to help with the feeding...here she is with her hand in one of the pelican.s mouth!

We visited a seahorse research facility...

And a very nice aviary...

Kalbarri was great...we have lots more to share about it...but time is short...maybe next time.

We are presently back in Perth on our way to the southern areas of WA.  The south is a more popular area and we specifically avoided it during the "school holiday" which ends tomorrow.  Many Australians take their vacations during the month of January when the kids are out of school...it is mid-summer here, you know.  Anyway, we will be heading down south, where the weather is somewhat milder, since it is further from the equator.

While in Perth these past few days we went to a performance of Cirque du Soleil which was terrific...and spent some time visiting with an Australian couple. Paul worked at the State Library of Florida in 1973 with Pippa Ryan.  They had not seen each other since then...but Pippa had been in touch with Susan Campbell from time to time.  Paul got her address from Susan, and we had a lovely visit at their home in Perth.  This message is being sent from the WiFi network at their home.

And so...our adventure continues...
