We spent a few days in Seward, on the Kenai Peninsula, last week.  We took the tent and stayed at Miller’s Landing at Lowell Point, just south of the city.  If you go to Seward in an RV, Miller’s Landing is not a bad place to stay.  They have some sites right on the water.  If you are traveling with a tent and need to use the showers and rest rooms, we wouldn’t recommend it.

The men’s shower had three stalls, one of which was boarded up with a sheet of plywood.  On looking into the other two stalls, I discovered the interesting showering arrangements.  You know that little black sprayer you have on your kitchen sink?  The one you use to rinse the dishes???  Well, that’s what was hanging at the end of a hose in each one of the showers.  The water was HOT, but the only adjustment was on or off…and the pressure; it was like a mini-pressure washer.  You didn’t want to point it at any of your more tender parts.  Paula says the ladies was similar, except all three stalls were “operational”.

Anyway, we did have a good time for four warm and sunny days.  We did three cruises out into Resurrection Bay and the Kenai Fjords National Park.  The first was on a boat with 200 of our closest friends.  The second was somewhat smaller and had only 50 people.  The third, and our favorite, was a small group of 8 passengers and a crew of 2 on a 38 foot boat.

We saw some spectacular wildlife and a tremendous calving glacier.  Almost 100 feet of the face of the glacier just dropped off while we were watching.  It looked like slow motion.  And then the crashing sound as the chunks of ice fell into the water was much louder that we expected.  Here’s a few shots of some of the sights…

A nice humpback whale with a calf…

Big rafts of otters…

one of whom came over to see watch the tourists on the boat!

A calving at Holgate glacier…

It’s difficult to show the scale in these photos…the calving had to be more than 100 feet across.

There were Horned Puffins…

and Tufted Puffins.

We saw almost 100 orcas…

several of whom were leaping out of the water!

We’re flying out tomorrow to visit Juneau and then the small town of Gustavus where we will stay for three days while visiting Glacier Bay National Park

So the adventure continues…
