FATHER SEAN P. MOLLOY

Born: August 29, 1932, Ballinrobe, Ireland

Ordained to the priesthood at Hallows College, Dublin June 17, 1956

Died: March 25, 1978, Merritt Island, FL

Father Malloy went to Catholic University after he left Lopez and then came to Merritt Island to become pastor of the newly formed Divine Mercy parish.

With its beginnings at the "Barn Theater" in 1964, Fr. Sean P. Molloy was named first pastor and Divine Mercy Catholic Church became a recognized parish. This same year, Divine Mercy School opened its doors in a warehouse at Merritt Island Airport with 185 students.

Throughout the next thirty-five years, expansion continued with the construction of our present church (1975), our school (1965), our Dome/social hall (1967); the addition of the parish administration building, "Mercy Center", rectory, and school library.

On Saturday, March 25th, 1978, the parish was getting ready for the Easter Vigil. Father O'Doherty, assistant pastor, went to look for Father Molloy and found him dead in the rectory from an apparent heart attack. You can imagine what a mournful Easter that was for our church.
